In 1905, the mother of Ann Jarvis Reeves passed away. She wanted to honor her memory and began petitioning for a “Mother’s Day”. A day for each family to honor their Mother. She never intended for the day to become so commercialized and, in fact, protested against that practice. She encouraged people to handwrite notes and cards and not just buy something. The day was officially made a holiday in 1908 and in 1914 the second Sunday of May was officially designated as Mother’s Day in the USA. Many other countries also celebrate a Mother’s Day, but not all of them do so on the same date.
The God of Heaven recognized the need for honoring Mothers also, but not just on one particular day. In fact, honoring one’s mother is to be a way of life. Consider the following passage: Leviticus 19:2-3 “Speak to all the congregation of the sons of Israel and say to them, ‘You shall be holy, for I the LORD your God am holy. Every one of you shall reverence his mother and his father, and you shall keep My sabbaths; I am the LORD your God.’”
Later this declaration was changed and it was a practice denounced by Jesus: Matthew 15:3-9 And He answered and said to them, “Why do you yourselves transgress the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition?” For God said, ‘HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER,’ and, ‘HE WHO SPEAKS EVIL OF FATHER OR MOTHER IS TO BE PUT TO DEATH.’ But you say, ‘Whoever says to his father or mother, “Whatever I have that would help you has been given to God,” he is not to honor his father or his mother.’ And by this you invalidated the word of God for the sake of your tradition. You hypocrites, rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you: ‘THIS PEOPLE HONORS ME WITH THEIR LIPS, BUT THEIR HEART IS FAR AWAY FROM ME. BUT IN VAIN DO THEY WORSHIP ME, TEACHING AS DOCTRINES THE PRECEPTS OF MEN.’”
The teaching is given again here: Ephesians 6:1-3 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER (which is the first commandment with a promise), SO THAT IT MAY LIVE LONG ON THE EARTH.
We are also given the good example of mothers in many places: Proverbs 31:28-30 Her children rise up and bless her; Her husband also, and he praises her, saying: “Many daughters have done nobly, But you excel them all.” Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain, But a woman who fears the LORD, she shall be praised.
Luke 2:51-52 And He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and He continued in subjection to them; and His mother treasured all these things in her heart. And Jesus kept increasing in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.
2 Timothy 1:5 For I am mindful of the sincere faith within you, which first dwelt in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am sure that it is in you as well.
May all Mothers know that God has given a place of honor to you and that you are appreciated. May all of us that have been blessed with a godly Mother be thankful to God for her and all that she has done.
