Some people are fascinated by seemingly unknown things or unexplained things and so they search for answers.

Several years ago, there were a number of crop circles that were discovered and many thought they were made by aliens or the ships of aliens.  Later it was discovered that the crop circles were made by ordinary people wanting to cause some excitement.

People desire to know things in a practical way.  This is understandable since most of what we experience is able to be processed by one of our five physical senses.  And so, it should come as no surprise that many seek to see a sign of some kind to believe in anything.

This type of thinking is not new, in fact, Jesus dealt with this very thing.  Despite the fact that He was giving proof of His claims, we find this account: Matthew 12:38-39  Then some of the scribes and Pharisees said to Him, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from You.”  But He answered and said to them, “An evil and adulterous generation craves for a sign; and yet no sign will be given to it but the sign of Jonah the prophet.”

The scribes, it seemed, were demanding a performance of Jesus to show them specifically what they undoubtedly had heard about. But, Jesus was having none of that.  He did other miracles after this, but only for the purpose of confirming His authority and not as an on-demand demonstration.

Today, God no longer works miracles through anyone, but has given us His Holy Bible.  We can read and know that He is God, Jesus is His only begotten Son and that salvation is given to all those who obey Him.

A sign is not required nor will it be forthcoming.  Remember the account of the rich man and Lazarus?  In that account from Luke 16 the rich man implores Abraham to send Lazarus from the dead to warn his five brothers.  But Abraham tells him that the brothers have Moses and the prophets to listen to; and if they will not believe them, they will not listen to one risen from the dead either.

Today, we are to listen to the risen Savior, Jesus Christ.  (see John 12:48 and Hebrews 1:1-2)   We should read, study and obey the words, the teaching of and from Him.

No sign was going to be given on demand to the scribes or to the rich man’s brothers; and if people today are waiting for one to be given, then they will be disappointed.

God has given us all that we need to be a follower of His in Christ.  It is up to us to read, know, believe, and obey Him.
